Overview
The purpose of an enrolment scheme is to assist the school board to manage the risk of overcrowding, provide a fair and transparent process for enrolment and to ensure we are making the best use of schooling facilities across the network of local schools.
Purpose and principles of an enrolment scheme – New Zealand Legislation
Enrolment schemes do mean that all families will have entitlement to attend a school that is reasonably convenient to them but won’t necessarily have the same entitlement to enrol at all state schools. Note that all students who are already enrolled at a school before a home zone is implemented or changed are entitled to stay at their current school.
It’s important that we hear and understand community perspectives before we establish this new enrolment scheme at Barrytown School – especially the design and practical implications of the home zone. This consultation process is about enrolment schemes, which determines the entitlement to enrol. It’s important to note that a student’s eligibility to enrol may be different to their eligibility for School Transport assistance. The Ministry will consider all feedback and consult with the school board before making a final decision. We expect the school community to be updated about progress made by the end of September 2024. The new schemes and changes are expected to come into effect for Term 4 2024.

However, any decision the Ministry of Education makes to withhold information can be reviewed by the Ombudsman, who may tell us to release it.
