Primary principals who are NZEI Te Riu Roa members are automatically bound by the Primary Principals’ (NZEI Te Riu Roa) Collective Agreement 2023-2025 (PPCA).
Primary principals who are not union members and who have signed the corresponding individual employment agreement receive the terms and conditions based on that agreement.

IEA for Primary School Principals – NZEITerm 3 2024 – 22 July to 27 September
The first increase will be made to the base payment of Leadership in Literacy and Numeracy. The base annual payment rises from $2,320 to $4,000.
Term 4 2024 – 14 October to 20 December
The third and final increase will be made to the school roll-based salary component (U-grade) on 2 December.
The new U-grade salary range is from:
- $118,003 for U1 to U3 school principals
- to $190,347 for U16 school principals.
No action is required for this change.
Term 1 2025 – 27 January to 11 April
The second and final increase is made to the base payment of Leadership in Literacy and Numeracy. The base annual payment rises from $4,000 to $8,000.
No action is required for this change.
